New Special Issue: Ergonomics, Gender, and Social Sustainability

The IEA Gender & Work Technical Committee is pleased to announce the publication of the Special Issue “Ergonomics, Gender, and Social Sustainability” in the International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics. This Special Issue builds on two decades of international collaboration within the IEA Gender & Work Technical Committee, while extending its agenda to the increasingly urgent question

The IEA Gender & Work Technical Committee is pleased to announce the publication of the Special Issue “Ergonomics, Gender, and Social Sustainability” in the International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics. This Special Issue builds on two decades of international collaboration within the IEA Gender & Work Technical Committee, while extending its agenda to the increasingly urgent question of social sustainability.

Guest edited by members of the Gender & Work TC, the Special Issue brings together 17 articles examining how gender relations shape work activity, occupational health, working conditions, and opportunities for socially sustainable work across a wide range of occupations and contexts.

The contributions address gendered occupational exposures and health risks, work organization and structural inequalities, socio-ecological transitions, and participatory approaches to intervention and capability development. They also reflect diverse traditions within ergonomics, including human factors and activity-centered ergonomics, highlighting the value of dialogue across approaches for understanding and transforming contemporary work.

Its concluding editorial, “Gender, power, and social sustainability at work: advancing an ergonomics agenda,” synthesizes the contributions and proposes directions for more equitable, inclusive, healthy, and sustainable futures of work.
