Abstract
This chapter describes the role and characteristics of the source in determining the effectiveness of communications to re- ceivers. It begins by reviewing the various parties who may serve as a warning source and considers how a manufacturer should go about recognizing when warnings are necessary as well as how to go about disseminating effective warnings. A re- view Is presented of research on the characteristics of a warning source that make it more effective. Inconsistencies in research findings are discussed and two relatively recent theories of per- suasive communications are presented as a means of resolving these inconsistencies. The chapter concludes with recommen- dations for further research.
