We are excited to announce the recipients of the May 2021 cycle of the Gary Marsden Travel Awards (GMTA). The GMTA accepts applications from SIGCHI members who are students, early career researchers, or those experiencing financial hardship or lack of institutional support. It offers funds for attending HCI conferences, events, and (for early career researchers) mentorship meetings. In its third cycle since its revamp, we accepted all applicants who applied, supporting attendance at CHI 2021 and CSCW 2021. This rate of acceptance was possible due to the lower costs of virtual travel, and given the focus on virtual events this year in general, we have removed limitations on the number of times applicants can apply for virtual travel, as noted on the GMTA webpage.

We hope to continue ensuring that the GMTA can meet the diverse needs of HCI community members. If you have feedback, you can email us at sigchi-4all@acm.org.

We also thank the travel awards teams, led by Zhengjie Liu and Astrid Weber. For the May 2021 cycle, Zhengjie’s team included Anicia Peters, Gerrit van der Veer, Matt Jones, Simone Barbosa, and Susan Dray, and Astrid’s team included Frank Bentley, Moira Burke, Kori Inkpen, and Pooja Chitre.

At the same time, we must also say goodbye to several volunteers as they end their term with the travel awards program. We extend a special and heartfelt thank you to Anicia, Astrid, Gerrit, Matt, Simone, and Susan, as well as AJ Brush, Jofish Kaye, and Natalie Garrett, for all that they have done for the travel awards programs and the impact they have made on broadening participation within the SIGCHI community. Community support through SIGCHI would not thrive without such dedicated volunteers.
