214. Freeman, K., & Wogalter, M. S. (2002). On informing women of child bearing age about seat belt risk during pregnancy. Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, 46, 943-946.
Abstract:
Seat belts have been effective in reducing serious injuries and deaths in vehicular accidents. However, their use by women in the third trimester of pregnancy can cause placental damage and fetal injury or death in relatively minor motor vehicle accidents without severely injuring pregnant women. The lack of seat belt use in similar or more…
On making legal documents understandable: Objective and subjective measures
Year:

83. Howe, J. E., & Wogalter, M. S. (1995). On making legal documents understandable: Objective and subjective measures. Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, 39, 430-434.
Abstract:
Citizens are often asked to sign a variety of legal documents such as contracts, monetary agreements, and consent forms, but the adequacy of how well informed average citizens become when they sign such documents is unclear. A recent survey indicated that respondents signed a variety of legal documents that they did not fully read or…

Abstract:
This work examines the terms most frequently used to describe our field, which has variously been named Ergonomics, Human Factors, Human Factors Engineering, and Engineering Psychology. A large number of definitions were collected, including those assembled in an earlier technical report by Licht, Polzella, and Boff (1990). First, the definitions were stripped of connectorwords. Second,…
On the hazard of quiet vehicles to pedestrians and drivers
Year:

356. Wogalter, M. S., Lim, R., & Nyeste, P. (2014). On the hazard of quiet vehicles to pedestrians and drivers. Applied Ergonomics, 45, 1306-1312.
Abstract:
The need to produce more ef fi cient and less polluting vehicles has encouraged mass production of alternative energy vehicles, such as hybrid and electric cars. Many of these vehicles are capable of very quiet operation. While reducing noise pollution is desirable, quieter vehicles could negatively affect pedestrian safety because of reduced sound cues compared…
On the prediction of pictorial comprehension
Year:
2003

Abstract:
Pictorial development and testing can be a costly and inefficient process. The process of designing and testing pictorial symbols could benefit from a precursor test to determine the likelihood that a concept will permit the design of a successful symbol (according to subsequent comprehension testing). This study examines whether ratings of the concepts of to-be-designed…
On the prioritization of safety warnings in product manuals
Year:
1997
119. Vigilante Jr., W. J., & Wogalter, M. S. (1997). On the prioritization of safety warnings in product manuals. International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, 20, 277-285.
Abstract:
Most warning research has focused on how to best present individual hazards on signs and labels. However, many products have multiple hazards and to date there has been very little research on how to effectively present multi-hazard warnings. The present paper studies the sequencing of safety warnings in product manuals using warning statements from manuals…
On the reading of product owner’s manuals: Perceptions and product complexity
Year:
2002
221. Mehlenbacher, B., Wogalter, M. S., & Laughery, K. R. (2002). On the reading of product owner’s manuals: Perceptions and product complexity. Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, 46, 730- 734.
Abstract:
This research focuses on the self-reported use of owner's manuals for automotive vehicles. The results indicate that owner's manuals are frequently not read. Nevertheless, people prefer owner's manuals to electronic presentations of the same product information. Implications for facilitating reader use of product documentation are discussed.

Abstract:
Beliefs about the validity and reliability oflnternet web-site information is important to both the user and to the success of a site. The present study examined aspects ofreported trust of the Internet. A total of 247 participants ( 171 undergraduate students & 76 non-students) were asked a series of questions. In general, participants reported trusting…

Abstract:
This study modeled the open-plan office environment by introducing background speech (a common workplace noise) at moderate decibel levels and measuring performance on a computer editing task. Also assessed was whether focussed attention moderates the effects of background speech on task performance. Editing accuracy was significantly higher under quiet compared to continuous

Abstract:
Tires are among the most critical components of motor vehicles, requiring proper maintenance to minimize the risks of accidents associated with failure. Tire failures at high speeds in vehicles such as SUVs have resulted in vehicle rollovers, serious injuries and occupant death. Tire degradation, as a result of age-related factors, can be contributor to tire…
